photo: theary meak

spent the weekend with loved ones and friends including my really great friend alicia. we met at work, lived together and a few years ago, she took off to brooklyn to chase her dreams. she is doing great things for herself and i am happy for her. but there are times like these when i wish i could just stick her in my pocket.

i miss having a good gal friend around.

i have space to spare inside me
for the stars, too: so full of room
fills my heart; so lightly
would it let go of him whom
for all i know i have started
to love, it may be to hold.
strange, as if never charted,
stares my fortune untold.

last sunday, we put together a birthday dinner for theary at our house. we cooked up some magic in the kitchen while our friends were in charge of bringing in the bottles. what an amazing time! nothing could've made her more thrilled than being in the comfort of our own home with the people that we cherished. and then the snow came tumbling down!

we also gave our lovely guests the liberty of playing photographers for the night with some disposable cameras. this is what they captured for us.

what a memorable night! see the soiree album here.

i assisted my sister on a sunday afternoon excursion with lizzy and dusty. its been a while since i actually used my camera for an entire day so this was a real treat. they were easy going as usual which made it a piece of cake. we started at the nolan house in bostwick (where we eventually got booted out of for the first time!) and then finished up in downtown madison. view their session here.

back in january, my childhood friend monica needed some help planning her son's first birthday party. she wanted it to be themed from maurice sendak's "where the wild things are." we went the d.i.y route and created everything mostly from scratch.

this centerpiece was found at hobby lobby and reminded us of the fort they built in the movie. the pine cones were left over from winter decorations.

the huge marble cake

the vines were handmade from party streamers, tissue papers and a glue gun.my little brother drew the entire picture free handed with pastel chalk on packing paper. we added the christmas bulbs for our source of light.

monica and i made a great team!

i filled each bag with fruit snacks, caramel popcorn with cinnamon toast crunch, home made golden sugar cookies in the shape of a crown, a compass, hershey kisses and swiss miss hot chocolate with marshmellows! i also hand made thank you notes. i drew each one and water colored them individually.

party planning is one of many things i enjoy doing :)
this was a blast.

i had no idea what to get my sister as a gift from san francisco, until i read about zach houston. zach is a visual artist and poet from oakland who runs the poem store. he writes poems on a typewriter about anything you'd like in exchange for your suggested donation. i emailed him in advanced to know where i could specifically find him. initially i was supposed to meet him at the ferry's plaza farmers market but he was kind enough to meet me at the civic center. i asked him to write a poem about my sister theary and her use of natural light in photographs.

he wrote this piece.

i expected our encounter to be brief, but we ended up walking around and chatting. after we got to know each other a bit, he wrote a poem for me and it definitely reflected the current lost in translation state that i was in at that moment in time. he was the first stranger during my stay in california that i actually had the opportunity to sit down and talk to. he really made such an inspiring impact on my decision to maybe move to the bay area soon. zach is an amazing and humble person and i am so very glad to have met him.

what a truly beautiful gift he has.

sending a very happy birthday to my friend, nene! he is the dapper man posed in this gemini portrait for the zodiac project i did last summer. we recently worked together on some photographs for the street local vintage collection. he has been a good friend and supporter of my work for a long time now.

wishing happiness to you and your beautiful family!
have a happy saturday everyone! xox

inspired by east atlanta street art, the kids and i created these sweet little nothings for their mom's to give on mother's day. i really adored their water colored creations, and wanted to keep them for myself but i just couldn't. i think we'll do another project next week so i can hang them around the office at home :)

it's also teacher appreciation week, and we've been getting so much love from the parents. this has been a really awesome week at walden. in just a few more weeks, we'll be doing the annual walk now for autism speaks. i am really excited about this.

i had quite the unsuccessful saturday for missing out on local natives, not once but twice. first i missed their in-store event at criminal records that i did not know about, but i made it there just in time for a quick photo. lastly, their show was sold out at the masquerade when i walked up to the ticket counter. yes, the one that i've been talking about for months. so i made up for it with a sunday funday in rutledge, georgia. windows down, jamming to gorilla manor.

this is one of my favorite photos from today,
taken with a pentax k1000.

"i wish i were a warhol silkscreen hanging on the wall, or little joe or maybe lou. i'd love to be them all. all new york city's broken hearts and secrets would be mine. i'd put you on a movie reel, and that would be just fine."
